Historical background

The film is set in the 16th century, when India was ruled by the Mughal Empire, founded by Babur in 1526. The Mughals were descendants of Timur and Genghis Khan, and followed Islam as their religion. They expanded their empire through conquests and diplomacy, and brought cultural and artistic achievements to India. The Mughals faced resistance from several Hindu kingdoms, especially the Rajputs, who were known for their bravery and loyalty. The Rajputs were divided into several clans and states, such as Amber, Mewar, Marwar, Bundi, etc. The Rajputs often fought among themselves for power and prestige, but also united against external threats.

The film focuses on the reign of Jalaluddin Muhammad Akbar (1542-1605), who was the third Mughal emperor and one of the greatest rulers in Indian history. He ascended the throne at the age of 13 after his father Humayun's death in 1556. He was guided by his regent Bairam Khan until he came of age and assumed full control of his empire. He expanded his empire to cover most of India, from Afghanistan to Bengal, and from Kashmir to the Deccan Plateau. He was known for his military prowess, administrative reforms, religious tolerance, patronage of arts and sciences, and promotion of a syncretic culture known as Din-i Ilahi.

The film also depicts the marriage of Akbar and Jodhaa Bai (also known as Hira Kunwari or Mariam-uz-Zamani), who was a Rajput princess of Amber (now Jaipur). She was the daughter of Raja Bharmal and Rani Padmavati. She married Akbar in 1562 as part of a political alliance between the Mughals and the Rajputs. She was one of Akbar's three chief wives (the other two being Ruqaiya Sultan Begum and Salima Sultan Begum) and the mother of his eldest son Jahangir. She was also a devout Hindu who practiced her faith freely in Akbar's court. She influenced Akbar's policies towards Hindus and helped him establish cordial relations with other Rajput states.
