2. Preserving Boluses

Scarlet Rot is among the most punishing status effects in Elden Ring, and regions like Lake of Rot and Caelid are flooded with it. Preserving Boluses cure Scarlet Rot instantly, saving you from a slow and painful death.

While you can craft these later with the right Cookbook, I usually kept a stockpile from the start. During my first venture into the Lake of Rot, I underestimated how fast rot could stack—and barely made it out alive. From that point on, these boluses became a staple in my quick-access pouch.

3. Starlight Torch

Dark caves and catacombs can hide ambushes, pressure plates, and even important loot. While a regular torch works, the Starlight Torch provides a much brighter radius and helps illuminate hidden paths.

I remember wandering into the Catacombs of the Giant and nearly walking into a trap simply because I couldn’t see the pressure plate on the floor. Equipping the Starlight Torch immediately changed my navigation experience in such zones.

5. Spelldrake and Fireproof Dried Liver

Many terrain-based threats in Elden Ring come from elemental hazards like fire and magic. These consumables temporarily boost resistance to elemental damage, allowing you to tank your way through lava zones or magical traps.

When I entered Mt. Gelmir, I kept a stack of Fireproof Dried Liver handy. It allowed me to cross lava flows and get to areas that would normally melt my health bar instantly. If you plan to explore every inch of the map, defense against elements is as important as raw damage output.

6. Bewitching Branch

While not directly related to terrain, this consumable can turn difficult environmental encounters to your advantage. In areas where enemies are clustered in narrow paths or ambush zones, charming a hostile NPC can provide a distraction and safe passage.

In the Subterranean Shunning Grounds, using a Bewitching Branch on one of the enemies helped me pass through a tricky section without alerting others. That sort of strategic utility makes this item a surprisingly effective tool for explorers.

7. Crafting Kit and Cookbooks

Finally, no explorer should venture far without a Crafting Kit and a good collection of Cookbooks. These unlock the ability to craft items like boluses, aromatics, and resistances on the fly. Having access to this system means you can adapt to environmental threats without having to retreat to a Site of Grace.

During a long expedition into Nokron, I ran out of healing items but still had ingredients to craft replacements. That saved my run—and the precious Runes I would’ve lost.
